Â
A Closer Look at Fascia:
Â
For centuries, fascia was overlooked—discarded in dissections and ignored in medical studies. But recent research reveals that this slippery, web-like tissue is a key player in whole-body health.
Fascia wraps and weaves through every part of us—organs, bones, muscles, tendons—and makes up nearly 20% of our body mass. It’s 70% water and designed to glide, slide, and support. When healthy, it creates a sense of ease and bounce; when dehydrated or bound by tension, it can feel sticky, stiff, and unyielding.
Fascia is now known to be the most richly innervated tissue in the body—even more so than skin—meaning it is deeply connected to sensation, awareness, and the nervous system. It’s the communication bridge between body and brain, offering us real-time feedback through interoception, proprioception, and exteroception.
This tissue isn’t passive—it responds to emotion, to breath, to movement. Taiji and Qigong practitioners have long known what science is just now confirming: gentle, mindful movement keeps the body supple, the mind clear, and the inner pathways open.
We’ll also explore two key types of fascial nerve receptors:
-
Pacini receptors, which respond to quick vibrations and bouncing
-
Ruffini receptors, which respond to slow, steady gliding and pressure
You’ll learn how to activate these receptors using practical tools and intentional movement, helping you restore fluidity, improve posture, and deepen awareness.

Â
What You Might Experience:

Greater ease and mobility in everyday movement
-
Calming of the nervous system
-
A deeper sense of presence in your body
-
Relief from chronic tension or stiffness
-
Renewed energy and spaciousness in breath and posture

The Deeper Thread
Fascia is more than connective tissue. It’s part of how we feel, move, and process the world. In Daoist philosophy, fascia connects to the meridians that carry energy through the body. In this workshop, we’ll highlight the Yang meridians—those that move upward, outward, and forward—and learn how to meet their patterns of tension with gentle release.
Modern research is also uncovering the emotional intelligence of fascia. Studies suggest that our fascia responds not only to physical load but to emotional experience. As you move through this class, you may find that release in the tissue brings release in the heart or clarity in the mind.
This is about more than flexibility. It’s about listening.
It’s about honoring the quiet intelligence woven through your entire being.
What to Bring:
Because this class is held over Zoom, you’ll need to bring your own tools. Nothing fancy—just items you can find around the house or purchase easily if needed:
-
A yoga mat or soft surface to lie on
-
A tennis ball, bouncy ball, and lacrosse ball (or similar variety of densities)
-
A foam roller (optional but helpful)
-
A 3-foot-long stick or bar (PVC pipe, broom handle, or wooden dowel all work well)
-
A folded towel or blanket for support
